6 HVAC TIPS FOR PET OWNERS…
It’s a fact that your pets may affect your indoor air quality and if you’re like me, we love our pets no matter what they are. Dogs, cats, birds, little guys like gerbils and hamsters, even our scaly friends like snakes and other creatures all contribute to indoor air quality.
Not matter what shape or species, we love our pets and they’re here to keep us company. Owning pets has been shown to improve mood and mental health. The mental health benefits are proven… but there can be problems.
Fur, dander, and the associated bringing in of outdoor contaminants, your pets can have a pretty serious impact on your indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency.
AirVantage has prepared a list of 6 HVAC TIPS FOR PET OWNERS that will aid in keeping the air quality inside your home clean and fresh. Need more info quick… Call John now… 409-925-6171.
Tip No. 1 is to monitor your Air conditioning filter/s and keep them clean.
There are several types of HVAC filters. We recommend the Filtrete 1900 Maximum Allergen Reduction filter. Sure it costs a little more, but you can learn why it’s worth investing a little more by clicking this link to Consumer Reports and see why they are recommended.
You should be changing your air filter every 30-60 days.
The best way to remember to check your HVAC filter is to just add it as an event to your digital calendar and have it repeat on the 1st day of every month. Or, if you’re using our Air Vantage calendar, just open and add a note to remind your to change your filter on the 1st of every month.
Recommendation No. 2 is to keep your AC ducts clean…
Humans as well as pets have dander and these small particles that are shed everyday can be a problem to families and individuals with allergies.
Pet dander is the tiny particles of skin that animals with fur or feathers shed. Pet dander can be a real problem if you are allergic. Whenever you inhale these small particles of skin, your body could respond by coughing, sneezing, wheezing, or developing a stuffy or runny nose. Prolonged exposure to pet dander can lead to bronchitis and other respiratory problems.
Pet dander will find a way to get into your home’s air ducts. When airborne contaminants get stuck in the air ducts, they get stirred up and recirculated through the home every time the HVAC system is turned on.
Inspect your air ducts for pet hair, dust, and debris. You’ll know a dirty duct when you see one. We recommend professional duct cleaning every 3-5 years.
No. 3 on our list is to groom your pet on a regular basis
When our fur babies are clean and groomed your home and indoor air stays cleaner. Less shedding, less fur in the filter and ducts.
Groom your dog outside or in your garage when possible by brushing your dog every couple of days. This will go a long way to reduce dog hair and promote a clean and healthy coat. You really don’t need to bathe your dog very often, maybe once every 60 days unless they’ve gotten themselves into something smelly or dirty.
No. 4. Is To Monitor Your Outdoor Condenser On A Regular Basis…
Your dog or even your cat can damage the fins of your condenser by clawing or urinating on the aluminum fins. The acid can eat away at and damage the fins.
If you notice your pet marking the condenser unit, it may lead to damaging corrosion over time. It doesn’t hurt for you to occasionally rinse the fins as a precaution. You can also choose to install a small fence around your condenser… just make sure it doesn’t impede airflow.
5. Regularly Scheduled Maintenance Check Ups…
Keep up with your HVAC maintenance on a regular basis. A house with pets is full of love, but it’s also full of fur, which puts extra stress on your HVAC system. Scheduled HVAC maintenance include inspection and tune-up service
AirVantage’s professional technicians will take a good look at the indoor and outdoor units, provide maintenance services and make suggestions on how to best take care of your unit and protect it from excessive pet hair issues.
