All About Air Conditioning Grill Selection
Occasionally, homeowners replace their Air Conditioning grills for various reasons. Maybe you are updating your color palette. It could be they are old and discolored. Or, it could simply be because they are broken or bent. There’s a lot of reasons why homeowners remove and replace their ac duct grills.
There’s one important grill question we get…
What is the best direction to place my grill? The simple answer is to install it so that the grill directs air to the exterior wall of your room. The next question we get asked is “what is the right grill for my room?”
There are a number of air conditioning grill types but, the three most common grill types are: the 3 way, the 2 way and VML (variable movement louver) which are carried by the big box stores and will generally serve most types of residential rooms.
The most popular AC grill is 3 way-
The intended use for the 3-way grill also known as a register, is in ceilings because of its ability to spread the air flow in 3 different directions with the primary direction in the middle of the grill. This grill should be installed facing towards the exterior wall. This will help relieve the heat load that exists from there.
Next we have the 2 way grill-
This grill is intended for use on walls preferably toward the middle of a wall because of it’s ability to spread air flow in two directions and throw it’s air toward the top of the room where it can drop down to distribute comfortable air.
The VML air grill is the most versatile-
Why? It’s because it’s louvers can be adjusted to distribute comfortable cool or heated air to the room from even the corner of your room, whether it is in the wall or ceiling location.
With all of these grill registers, it’s important to keep in mind proper aiming of the cool air flow to the direction the heat comes from. For instance… the perimeter of the home or the exterior wall. This is the way to help keep all the rooms in your home consistently comfortable.
