Why is Air Conditioning Duct work So Important?
Having the properly sized ac ducts in your home is vital to an efficient air-conditioning system.
The ducts need to be the right size, in the right places, and must be properly sealed. Your home HVAC system’s duct-work is far too often overlooked as an important factor for making an air conditioning system work up to its proper capacity.
Return air duct systems are often the most obvious culprit, but the air duct supply system needs to be adequately sized as well.
In the more humid climates of Houston and our Gulf Coast service area, we find this evident when an electric air handler (usually located in an attic) has a large amount of condensation building up on the outside of the cabinet. This type of condensation is an indication of a problem. However in less humid areas, under sized duct work just becomes less evident and it may require a professional ac technician to determine whether the return air and supply air is adequately sized for that system.
A word of caution is necessary as many times, homeowners and some unscrupulous air conditioning companies focus on replacing just the equipment, whereas the duct work itself could very well be the cause of the failure of the original equipment and certainly be less expensive to update.
At the very least… not addressing your duct work sizing can severely diminish the efficiency of even the most efficient of air conditioning equipment.
